Why Flatbed Truck Campers?

We're often asked why we chose to use Flatbeds instead of standard slide-in campers, frame-mounted, or a van. Beyond the obvious, "because flatbeds are awesome!" here are our top reasons to go with a flatbed truck camper.

Modularity

One of the top reasons we decided to build Flatbed Truck Campers over anything else, is because of the modularity. With a flatbed truck, you have a blank canvas to build whatever is needed for your truck. Whether you need boxes for tools, sidewalls for cargo, storage boxes around your wheel wells, or just a camper, the possibilities are endless. With a little bit of time, you can also transform your truck between different options. It's not uncommon for us to drop the camper and put on sidewalls for dump runs, doing odd jobs, or helping a friend move (Don't tell anyone else). Because of this modularity, we aren't just stuck with a truck that does only one thing, we have flexibility depending on the day or the task at hand. #Freedom

Floor Space

When deciding to build flatbed campers, we wanted to make the most of our floor space. Sure, we could put storage boxes under the sides of a standard camper, but then we'd lose out on a more open feel to the camper. With full-width floors, we could decide where to put things, instead of the camper design forcing us to place cabinets and benches in certain areas. Utilizing the full floor space also helped to keep our build self-contained. Other than disconnecting our running lights, we don't have to disconnect any water lines, drains, power, fuel, etc to disconnect the camper from the truck. This means we can drop our camper anywhere in about 30 minutes, and still use it as a living unit.

Decks & Ramps

This was a biggie for us. We wanted to build campers with features nobody else in the industry was doing. If we kept a standard truck bed, we couldn't build decks off the side, or ramps off the rear for rolling gear into the camper. Ok, we could do a ramp, but it would be very narrow by comparison. Along the same vein, we can put doors anywhere on the camper. You can now enter your camper from wherever it makes sense for your needs. Need a side door instead of the back? No problem!

Future Proofing

Sure we could put doors anywhere we want with a frame-mounted camper, like many of the RV builders out there, but not everyone has a big savings account to blow on a camper build. With a Whiskey Tango Camper, you can move your investment to a new truck when needed/wanted. If you wanted to start your rig with the truck you have, and then upgrade to a new quiet diesel or EV (when the time comes) in the future, you can. You aren't stuck with a rig that can't change with the times.

Not everybody will agree that flatbed campers are the perfect rig for overlanding, and that's ok. We're not made for everyone, just those that want the most bang for their buck, and the freedom to do their thing their way. If you are the type that is interested in a flatbed camper shell for your build, hit us up, and we'd love to chat about your next project.
